We love our dogs , they are a big part of our family. Big is the operative word here. Big in every which way. Big feet, big tongues, big coats, big appetites and big hearts. If you have room, not only on your section but in your family then these wonderful dogs will be the best addition to your lives.
They were originally bred as a companion dog in Germany way back in the 1800's and have been in New Zealand since 1991. We were very lucky to have one of the first litter in 1995 and our love for the breed has only increased since then.
They love to be with you and be a part of what you are doing, are very willing to please and quite easy to train.
Leonbergers are a giant breed growing from 60 - 80 kg when fully matured. As with most giant breeds the Leonberger grows very very quickly and in order to maintain good health and strong bone they require balanced diets.
Exercise should be limited while they are young to place little or no stress on their joints. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia is a common problem in dogs, especially larger breeds, and poor nutrition and over exercise can contribute to this.
They have a relatively long thick double coat and require regular weekly grooming. It makes sense to start grooming as soon as you get your puppy home to get him used to it. The task is very easy as a pup his coat is shorter and easy to manage but as he grows so too does his coat . Grooming is beneficial for their skin health and circulation and prevents matting. it is a good opportunity to check for parasites too.
This is just a tiny overview of things you should know about Leo's. There is so much more one could write about but then the world of discovery about your pet would lose its wonder. We can say however that should you choose to become a Leo home you will hard pushed to just have one. They are addictive!
